childhood, revisited

it was my first time back home since college and everything seemed a little different, older. on a wistful, solitary walk through my neighborhood, i wandered absentmindedly into my local park, hardly recognizing the playground where i used to spend my elementary school afternoons. i was expecting the colorful plastic jungle that occupied my memories but instead, i found this almost foreign place- covered in graffiti, broken down, sitting helplessly under the watchful eye of looming power-lines. had it changed so much in only a few years or had i been the one who had been changed? or maybe all our memories hold a bit of fantasy.

portraits of strangers, part 1

in keeping with our firm belief that art is everywhere, the random acts of art project seeks not only to leave our own art out in the world, but also to find the hidden art that is omnipresent in the everyday.

sparrow is a resident of manhattan who is sadly moving onto to a new city come fall. what drew her here was the fact that new york is, above all, vibrancy: a city of lights and sounds, trains and taxis, pigeons and parks. but the lifeblood of any city, this one especially, is the diverse collection of people that call it home. this ongoing series is a candid look into the lives of the everyday people who make this city what it is. here they are, caught at work, at play, in a quiet moment.

meet your neighbors.

first discoveries, 2008-2009

the first discovery occurred back in fall of 2008 in a borders. the lucky explorers posted about it here and said that the idea might inspire them to start a similar project of their own!

the second discoverer had this to say "i came across 'a certain solitude of space' yesterday at the barnes and noble at columbia. lovely piece. i will place it sometime this week."

the third discoverers found another bookstore hideaway and had this to say in the winter of 2009: "i felt so happy when i found this in the bookshelves of columbia university bookstore when i went for a field trip with my yearbook class. i actually live in miami, florida and next year i will be going to univ. of south florida in tampa... and this inspired me to try something like this when i start college in the fall. i know i am not allowed to recreate this... but i just thought what you have done is such a great idea that i'd like to try something similar (with different artwork and poetry, of course) here in south florida. finding this gave me another reason to love nyc even more! thanks for the idea, and i will make sure to spread the love. peace!"

keep an eye out!
