getting involved

why get involved?
the point of this initiative is to bring art, in whatever form it takes, into unlikely places and to make the world a little bit brighter by bringing a small piece of beauty and happiness to someone's day. but it's a big, wide world out there and we can't do it alone. but you can join the movement and help spread the art by making small pieces and hiding them around in your favorite places. you don't need to be a professional artist (this site's humble creator certainly isn't!) or even know how to draw a straight line! all you need is a little patience and the drive to create.

how it works
1. make a small original work of art, poetry, or photography. feel free to be as creative as you want: any subject matter is fine, so long as it's pg-rated- you never know who's going to pick it up.
2. on the back of the artwork, write (along with the work's title and whatever name you'd like to use for yourself) a small blurb about our project and link people to this website. make sure to include the name of the project and instructions to pass the piece along. if you're unsure what to write, drop us a line and we'll send you a template.
3. send a photograph/scan of your piece along with your chosen name to randomartproject@aol.com so we can put the piece up in our online gallery.
4. hide it in a safe place for other people to find. the sky's the limit, but places like bookstores, libraries, drugstores, antique shops, and cafes always have useful little nooks and crannies that would be brightened nicely by your art.

what will happen to my art?
we at random acts think that part of the fun is in the mystery. maybe your finder will keep it or give it to a friend. maybe the chain of art-spreading will continue. but if you send us a picture of your piece before its voyage out into the world, it will be guaranteed to live forever in our virtual gallery. remember that when finders email us, we put it up on the site, so be sure to subscribe or check in frequently to see what becomes of your hidden treasures!

what else can I do?
if you're an artist who has works you think embody the "art is everywhere" motto, we would love to have your contributions as a guest blogger. shoot us an email with a few samples of your work and we'll get back to you if we want your input. you would retain all rights to the works, of course.
